Know what to check
Not every yak chew is made the same way. Check these three things, whichever brand you choose.
Look for a short list: milk, lime juice, and salt. For flavored chews, read the full ingredient list on the product page.
Yaksy chews follow the traditional chhurpi method and air-dry for weeks, which gives them a dense, long-lasting texture.

The basics
Yak chews are hard, dried cheese chews for dogs. They come from chhurpi, a traditional Himalayan cheese that herding families in Nepal have made for generations. Families first made it to preserve extra milk without refrigeration.
The classic recipe uses just four ingredients: yak milk, cow milk, lime juice, and a little salt. Because the chew is dried slowly until almost no moisture remains, it is far harder and longer lasting than a soft treat.
That hardness is also why size and supervision matter. Read our complete guide to yak cheese chews to learn more.
Our story
We follow the traditional method from start to finish:
Slow drying gives each chew its dense texture and long chewing time. It also supports Himalayan farming communities that have made this cheese for generations.

Their hardness keeps many dogs busy far longer than soft treats.
The traditional recipe uses milk, lime juice, and salt, and contains no rawhide.
Chewing helps dogs burn energy and relieve boredom.
Most dogs chew them without a strong smell or mess.
Yak chews are a treat, not a replacement for toothbrushing or a balanced diet.
Choose the right size
Size matters more than breed. A chew that is too small can become a choking risk.
| Dog weight | Chew size | Piece weight | Length | Example breeds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 15 lbs | Small | About 3.5 oz (100 g) | 4.5 to 5 in | Frenchie, Terrier, Dachshund, Shih Tzu |
| 15 to 35 lbs | Medium | About 5.5 oz (155 g) | 5.5 to 6 in | Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Corgi, Shiba Inu |
| 35 to 65 lbs | Large | About 7 oz (200 g) | 6.5 to 7 in | Golden Retriever, Boxer, Australian Shepherd |
| Over 65 lbs | XL power chewer | About 9.5 oz (270 g) | 7.5 to 8.5 in | German Shepherd, Lab, Rottweiler, Great Dane |
Weights and lengths are approximate. Pick a chew your dog cannot fit entirely in their mouth. Puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with dental problems need extra care, so ask your vet first.

Chew with care
Yak chews suit many healthy adult dogs when you size them correctly and supervise every session.
Supervise every session. Choose a larger size if you are unsure. Keep water nearby, and count the chew toward your dog's daily treats.
Your dog is a puppy, a senior, has dental problems, or has a dairy allergy. Ask your vet before you buy.
Your dog gags, vomits, has blood in the mouth, strains to pass stool, or stops eating after chewing.
Zero waste
When a chew wears down to about 2 inches, take it away so your dog cannot swallow it. You can turn the leftover piece into a crunchy puff.
Soak the small end in warm water for about 5 minutes.
Heat it on a microwave-safe plate for 30 to 60 seconds. Watch closely, because microwaves vary.
Let the puff cool completely before you serve it. It stays hot inside, so wait several minutes and supervise.
Never microwave a full-size chew. Some vets advise against feeding puffed pieces, so ask yours if you are unsure.
If your dog does not take to a Yaksy chew, we want to hear from you. See our refund policy for the steps.
